Sometimes it can ping just a little and you'd only hear it if all accessories were off (radio/AC/etc) and if it gets worse it can get louder until you hear an actual detonation thump. The only reason I know this is that my old NA used to ping like crazy. It had different levels of pinging...some just barely audible if cruising next to a wall that reflected the noise and some clear in the cabin.
